Tip Tuesday: Choosing Cake Flavors and Fillings
At a bakery like ours fillings and cake flavors are nearly endless when it comes to options, which can be over whelming. But with these few suggestions it can make your job a little eaiser! When deciding what to choose for your event consider the following:
1. Person of Honor: When celebrating a someone's special day tiered cakes are a fantastic choice and easy way to incorporate their favorite flavor combinations. Here at The Cake Boutique when someone chooses a tiered cake they have the option of each tier being a different flavor combination. When having an event with a lot of people it is always a smart move to have crowd pleasing options. If you do a tiered cake you could have one tier crowd pleasing while the other a combo that the person of honor with LOVE! If its a flavor combination that might not be very popular chose to do the smallest tier, if you know its a crowd pleaser do the largest tier. At the end of the day tiered cakes are the best way to add some fun flavors to an already amazing cake!
2. Guests: When serving a cake to a large crowd the traditional crowd pleasers are typically vanilla, chocolate or mixes of both. One way to stick with the traditional crowd pleasers but add an extra touch is by choosing a different filling. Chocolate chip or Cookies n' Cream buttercream are both a universally liked flavor but a little different than the plain vanilla or chocolate buttercream.
3. Seasonal: With every season comes great "in season" flavors. If you are choosing your cake flavor or filling consider what is fresh during that season. We love bringing in new seasonal flavors, nothing screams fall like a delicious pumpkin cake, a white chocolate peppermint buttercream for the winter, lemon for the spring, and strawberry and raspberries for the summer etc. When ordering your cake talk to your bakery and see what they suggest for seasonal flavors, adding seasonal flavors is one of the easiest ways bakeries can incorporate new flavor combinations to their menu. You never know they might have flavor combinations you would never consider.....
4. Allergies: Many people have food allergies and it is important to be conscious of your guest when choosing the flavors. If you are set on peanut-butter buttercream for you cake but have guest with a peanut allergy consider providing cupcakes in an allergen free choice. One of the main reasons why many people chose to do more traditional flavor combinations are allergy fears. If having peanut butter is something you are set on make sure your guests are aware of this, remember you may not be aware of other's allegories or how severe they may be.
