Tip Tuesday: Making a Perfect Gingerbread House!

Making a Gingerbread house is a great Holiday tradition, but few people are making them from scratch.  Many craft stores and super stores these days sell kits you can put together. However, the gingerbread always seems to be stale and tasteless. In the past few years I began making my own gingerbread house from scratch only to find it really wasn't that hard! With these tips below you too can simply make a gingerbread house.
1. Google templates for an easy print at home option to cut out your pieces. Also, you can purchase cookie cutters that are designed to create roofs and house sides.
2. Gingerbread dough can be frozen up to a month ahead and baked pieces can be stored in a cold area for a week or two. This way you can do it in stages and not all at once.
3. Royal icing is the "glue" that holds the house together. It should be stiff enough to holds its shape, but flexible enough to be spread. To keep freshly made royal icing from hardening place a moist towel over the bowl.
4. To color your icing use gel colors, for liquid colors can thin out your icing.
5. Crushed hard candies can be placed in the window holes and baked for an extra minute or two at the end to make beautiful "stained" glass effect.
6. Plan ahead! When making your house make sure you have a sturdy board and allow plenty of time for your house to set prior to decorating. Cans are great support while the house is setting.
7. Shredded wheat and other cereals as well as Necco Wafers and non-pariels make great options for roofs.
8. M&Ms, gumdrops, candy canes, chocolate covered sunflower seeds(lights!), big red(cut for brick!), smarties, peppermints, chocolate chips and coconut(snow) are great for decorating.
9. Don't forget a landscape walk way(crushed candy, rocked shaped chocolates), trees(upside down ice-cream cone with piped green royal icing), snowmen(stacked marshmallows with pretzel sticks), and light posts(candy-cane sticks).
10. Most of all enjoy!!
11. If all this seems to much let The Cake Boutique do the prep work for you we have homemade kits with all the supplies needed to make your own. Call us to order or pick up yours 856-418-1226.

Wedding Wednesday: Dream Idea Book

Did you just get engaged....even hoping to get engaged soon?! Our first suggestion is start clipping photos that you love. You will be over loaded with a ton of ideas and photos and it will be easy to lose track or forget things that you have found. Pin them, clip them, print them....and create a dream idea book. This will keep you organized and help you as you stop in at different vendors.

Cake Friday: Can you Guess our Favorite Cake?!

We have done many cakes and often we will say that this or that cake is our favorite...but there is one cake across the board that really is our #1 favorite cake to make! Look at these step by step photos and see if you can guess what it is!

First, dowels are added
to the bottom cake for support.

The top cake is stacked and doweled.

Yellow fondant is kneaded and worked.

The cake is covered and smoothed
in the yellow fondant.

The yellow is trimmed off the bottom of the cake.

A large blue strip of fondant is wrapped
around the base of the cake.

Thinner blue strips of blue fondant are cut.

In a half moon shape the blue fondant
is added to two sides of the cake.

A blue square is cut.

A thin rectangle is added to the square.
Using a stitching tool the square is outlined.

With a touch of water the square
is applied to the front of the cake.

A roll of yellow fondant is shaped.

A tear dropped shaped yellow
 fondant piece is formed.

The yellow tear drop is added
to the yellow roll of fondant.

A toothpick is added to each side for support.

With a touch of water it is added to the cake.

Using the baller tool each side is pressed in.

A "G" logo is hand painted.

The "G" is placed on the center of the blue square.

Now can you guess what this weeks cake friday is?!?!?!?

Boutique Chic: Decorating Class Certificates

As 2013 comes to an end some trending topics we heard a lot about were... "Yolo," rainbow loom, Miley Cyrus, cupcakes and 'twerking'. Although, 'twerking' might not be on the top of your lists for your children to learn cupcake decorating is super popular and trendy right now. A great gift for any child of all ages (adults too!) is a decorating class. Many craft stores or bakeries are offering decorating classes. I even participated in a cupcake decorating class on a cruise ship this past Thanksgiving break. Some of my favorite gifts are gift experiences. Kids these days seem to have EVERYTHING and I rack my brain on what to get a child that has everything already. That's why this year all of my cousins are getting gift certificates to take a decorating class. Both boys and girls love it ....and the best part is not only are they learning but they get to eat their creations!  The Cake Boutique offers classes on Sunday's throughout the year and have gift certificates available. Stop in or call at 856-418-1226 for more information.

Wedding Wednesday: Breaking Tradition with Non-White Wedding Cakes

When it comes to Wedding cakes many people are boxed into the idea that the cake must be white. Well with today's blog I am going to show you the world outside of that box...the world of color. Wedding cakes can be beautiful in all white, but adding a touch(even a lot) of color can make a cake really pop. Take these cake for example.....

This first wedding cake has a bunch of beautiful
hand-crafted gumpaste flowers. These gumpaste
flowers really pop on the grey fondant tiers.

Keeping the base of the cake white we added bright
pinks and greens to match the wedding colors.

This light blue cake is just perfect for a beach wedding.

I just love how this cake begins white
but has an ombre effect into a darker pink.

With the same ombre effect just a touch of
yellow is added to accent the fresh sunflowers.

Champagne is a great option for a more neutral
cake, but yet a break from the traditional.

Who says color wedding cakes can't be elegant?!

Every wedding cake should reflect you as a couple...just remember don't be afraid of color...embrace it!
