Cake Friday: Would You Like Fries With That?!

Here at The Cake Boutique we were super excited when this order came in for a surprise party. This unique cake was for a 35th Anniversary of a couple who met many years ago at a famous fast food restaurant. On their first meeting, Bill poured a jar of pickles over Marge's head- fast forward and they are still happily married.  After giving us their history, this customer let us run with the idea...and thats exactly what we did!
A square cutter was used to cut
yellow fondant into a "cheese" shape.
Using a touch of vegetable oil we ran it over
the cheese to give it a just melted shiny look.
Green fondant is cut into strips for
 the beginnings  of "lettuce."
The edges of the "lettuce" is rolled super
thin to give it a very realistic look.
Next, using a lusting powder the "lettuce" is
dusted to give it shadows and dimension.
Using a special circle cutter with
 ridges "pickles" are cut out.
The edges of the "pickles" are painted with
edible food coloring to give them a dark rim.
Using a red circle of fondant "tomatoes"
are carved out using a baller tool.
With a thin piece of white fondant
small squares are cut to resemble onions.
Pound cake is sliced into strips to resemble fries.
The "fries" are placed on a baking sheet and baked
a few extra minutes to give them a crispy look.
Creating a container to hold the fries,
yellow fondant is cut to line the inside.
Two emblems are hand cut with an exacto
knife to be placed on the "fries container and cup"
Multiple shades of brown are semi mixed to
create a wood look for the base of the cake.
Smoothing out the base of the cake
giving a look of a table.
A pizza cutter is used to cut the excess.
Black strips are cut to create a border for the cake.
The border is attached with a touch of water.
White fondant is cut into a rectangle
and folded over to create a "napkin."
After the napkins are placed on the cake, supports are
added before the larger elements are placed  on the cake.
The hand crafted fondant burger, fries container,
and pickle jar are placed on the cake.
Using a dowel through the center of the
fondant cup, it is adhered to the cake.
A decorating gel dyed with a touch of green
and yellow, "pickle juice" is created.
The "juice" is placed in the jar and down the cake to create a spilled look.
Fondant pickles are placed on the cake.
After adding a special message and a cup
of fondant ketchup this cake is finished!
Would you like some fries with that?!

  1. They say wedding cakes are the best cakes...but this one topped any cake I have ever seen in my life. My parents met at McDonald's and my dad thought he was funny and poured a jar of pickles on my mom's head before they dated (back in the 70's)...weird, but I told the Cake Boutique staff to play off of this idea and they exceeded any expectations I had for this cake. I only really expected a jar of spilled pickles on top of a small cake, yet they went all out, creating the pickle juice, fries, fry container, cup of soda, ketchup holder, etc. The cake was apparently for 40 people, but could have fed an army!

Brilliantly planned and expertly crafted, this cake surprised everyone and made my mom's eyes tear with emotion...seriously.

Cake Boutique is the #1 place to get cakes in the tristate are...get in there!

  2. Everyone at the party commented how unbelievable the cake was. Our nephew Gavin was so excited and kept telling me about the big surprise!
One correction on the story though. Bill only tossed a couple of pickles at me from the grill where he was working. If he had thrown a whole jar of pickles on my head, there wouldn't have been a 35th wedding anniversary to celebrate!!
    Thanks again!
