Tip Tuesday: How to make a Baby Bum?!

A few weeks ago we asked our blog readers for some questions that they were pondering about baking and decorating. Meredith, one of our loyal followers wanted to know about a baby shower cake that we do quite often here at the bakery. Her questions was:

Meredith Underhill Cazort This is a question about the cake with baby bottom, legs and feet: is that made of cake and covered with fondant, all fondant, or a molded plastic figure?

We actually use two main things to create the baby bottom. The base is made from rice krispie treats that are molded and the legs and feet are created from fondant. Here are some step by step photos of the baby bum being created.

First, rise krispie is molded into an egg shape.
Using two layers of white fondant
 the krispies are covered.
A smoothing tool is used to smooth
out the white fondant.
A pastry wheel is used to cut the excess.
Next, flesh fondant is rolled into
 a tapered oblong shape.
With a touch of water, the legs are attached.
Creating an indented egg shape, a "foot" is made.

Tiny "toes" are rolled from flesh colored fondant.
With a touch of water the toes
 and feet are attached.
Using a special tool "wrinkles" are etched in
  for a more realistic look.
Once a blanket is added the bum is complete!

For a baby girl shower….

or a baby boy shower!
