Tip Tuesday: Answering some of our Blog Reader Questions!

We are starting to get questions coming in to us in response to last weeks blog where we asked our readers to send in the questions they have been pondering about our industry. (Keep sending them in!)

Jamie Kay asks: Jamie Kay What are the best ways to save money but still have an amazing wedding cake?

This is actually a question that we get often, or have to often explain when couples bring photos of wedding cakes they have stumbled across on the internet or in magazines and don't realize the cost that these intensive detailed cakes take. In the cake world, fondant is typically more expensive than buttercream, hand-made elements(flowers, broaches, pearls, toppers) add to the cost, basically the more detailed the more time consuming and the more expensive. So with this in mind, there are still ways to create a budget friendly wedding cake that is amazing!
  • Choose a buttercream base instead of fondant. Buttercream cakes typically range in the $4-$7 a serving range compared to fondant which is in the $6-$9+ a serving. You can still choose to add fondant or gumpaste elements on top of the buttercream base to get a similar look.
  • Scaling down the number of handcrafted elements means less labor and a cheaper price! You can opt to do fresh flowers over gumpaste(and frankly we think fresh flowers are gorgeous!) or a pre-purchased topper or border(rhinestones etc.) will also bring down your cost as it is less work for your decorator to create or purchase.
  • If you are having a large wedding you can also scale down the size of your detailed wedding cake and have sheet cakes in the back to cut and serve your full guest list rather than having a large detailed cake that will serve all the guests.
These are just a few ways to have a budget friendly wedding cake that is still beautiful! Thanks Jamie for sending in your question!
