Tip Tuesday: Don't be Afraid of Fondant!!

On a daily basis we hear the following....
  • "Im not fond of fondant"
  • "I heard fondant is gross"
  • "I like this cake, but I don't want fondant"
  • "I want buttercream not fondant"
To this I say....DON'T BE AFRIAD! Let's clear up a few misconceptions about fondant....are there fondant's out there that taste gross...yes, however, there are many quality brands or recipes that simply just have marshmallowy flavor that compliments a buttercream quite well. If you are still not sure about the taste ask your bakery to sample the fondant. I give many samples and to the surprise of the customers that have made those comments above they find that they do in fact like it.
So why is fondant the new rage? Fondant can give a cake a perfectly smooth base which is more difficult to achieve with buttercream. Buttercream often has small imperfections. It also makes certain decorations possible that aren't feasible in buttercream. Is it possible to dye buttercream dark colors...yes however, it takes so much pigment that it can compromise the taste and texture of the buttercream, and therefore fondant is a way to achieve colors like black and red. Other bakeries will dye icing dark but here at The Cake Boutique we just won't do it because we know the negatives to it as well as...do you really want black teeth?!
So next time before you udder the statements above...remember don't be afraid of fondant. It can take an average cake to extraordinary because the possibilities are endless.
This fabulous cake just wouldn't be possible in buttercream!!
