Wedding Wednesday: The Negatives to Ordering your Wedding Cake to Early

You've just got engaged and your excitement is through the roof- totally understandable, however, sometimes this excitement can cause brides to be premature for ordering their wedding cake. I do suggest getting the ball rolling and securing your bakery, however, you don't want to do that too early. Ordering too early before other details like wedding colors, flowers, venue etc have been solidified make it hard to make design decisions. Also, ordering too early leaves a lot of time for changing your mind. Bakeries are very busy places and having multiple design consultations due to a lack of clarity of what you're looking for is a waste of both your time and the cake decorators. Also, many bakeries have a non-refundable deposit, therefore if you order your cake prior to booking the venue and find that a cake is included in your package you will be in a tough spot.

So what is the suggested time line for ordering your wedding cake? Different bakeries have different suggestions, but for the most part 6-8 months prior to your wedding date is a good time to start. This allows you plenty of time to do a tasting, consultation, looking for design options and order- and most other important details ie. venue, colors have been decided.
