Tip Tuesday: Kid's Cakes- More Bang for Your Buck

Looking for a cute cake for your kids that won't break the bank?! Stick to these few guidelines that will help keep cost down.
Shaped cakes are typically more expensive than doing a round or square cake.
So rather than doing a shaped cake like a spongebob or minion instead do a smaller spongebob on top of a cake or make a round cake look similar. The price difference between these two spongebob cakes is $170. Between the two minions the price difference is $140. Both options are super cute and impressive!
Another option when trying to lessen the cost of a children's cake (or most cakes for that manner) would be to choose a buttercream base to a fondant base. Although, fondant gives a very smooth precise look a buttercream cake can give a similar effect. Some cakes, buttercream isn't an option, such as quilting or ombre ruffles, but in most cases this is an option. Take for example, these minnie mouse cakes, the price difference for the fondant compared to buttercream base would be $50.
Many children's cakes include characters. Making 3D characters is quite time consuming and therefore expensive. A way to include the character, without busting the budget would be to bring a toy character in to be placed on the cake. Take this Jake and the Neverland cake we did, if they would have brought the character it would have been a $75 savings!
Every parent wants their child to feel special on their birthday and are looking for a special cake, even with budget limitations a cute cake is possible! Don't be afraid to talk with your bakery about what your budget is and options to stay within that budget.
