Tip Tuesday: Basic Fondant Tips

Fondant is definitely taking over in the world of custom cakes! Although, it can get a bad wrap for taste due to some poor quality brands that are on the market, fondant opens up many options that just aren't feasible with buttercream. Using fondant is actually a bit similar to playing with playdough.

1. Fondant colors can be mixed with other colors to make new ones. For instance, if you mix yellow and blue fondant you will get green. You can also dye fondant with food coloring, however, you want to use gel color rather than liquid because liquid can change the consistency.

2. Keep fondant in a ziplock bag while working with it and to store it, keep it in an air tight container. If left out fondant will dry hard.

3. When making 3d figurines, it is important to do it in steps allowing it to really dry before adding more pieces. It can take up to 2 weeks for it to fully dry.

4. When making decorations for cakes most of the time you want them to be super thin so they blend into the cake rather than stick out.

5. To attach fondant to a cake: a touch of water will do the trick.

6.  Paper towels are great for support while fondant is drying into certain shapes. You will see in our cake friday we use paper towels quite often while making bows.
