Tip Tuesday: Cake Travels

It never fails...every weekend we are peering out the window of the bakery watching customers put their hundred dollar cake in an over packed, hot, tiny car, on the lap of Uncle Joe with the dog sitting in the back seat; we all say our silent prayer that the cake makes it to its destination in one piece. Not everyone brings along Sparky and Uncle Joe, but quite often we see situations that could easily be avoided. When picking up your cake or cupcake orders there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Do you have enough room for your order? - I have seen customers come to pick up a three tier cake and 3 dozen cupcakes in a two seater car and quiet simply there isn't enough room to place the whole order in the car without stacking it.
  • Do you have a level spot on the floor or trunk cleared out for the cake?- Cakes and cupcake boxes should be placed on the floor on a level spot. Backseats are often tilted and if you make a stop that box can easily slide off. Also, if the cake is on the floor, you want to make sure that there is nothing around it that could slide or fall into the cake.
  • Is your car a proper temperature?- Especially when picking up cakes on a humid, hot day it is very important to turn your air conditioning way down and have it running for a while before you pick up your cake. You want to keep the cake cool during its travel and don't leave it in the car while you run into the store for a few quick errands. In just ten minutes on a warm day your cars internal temperature can be over 10 degrees warmer than the outside.
  • Drive like your bringing home your newborn!- You want to just take it easy when driving. Avoid potholes, sharp turns, or sudden stops.
Following these 4 simple tips can keep your cake or cupcakes from looking like these....
