Hiring the Home Baker

Everyone knows that person who makes great treats from home right?? For every story of the great home baker there are 10 horror stories. Everything from clients being left in the lurch at the last minute, to cakes that are less than tasty, or the infamous "nailed it" photos that look nothing like they were supposed to.  Making goodies from home is great and super fun to do with friends and family, but for special occasions sometimes it is best to contact a professional. Although, you might think you are getting a steal on the custom cake(there is probably a reason) your ordering, be cautions and do your research and think twice before ordering from a home baker.
Home bakers are typically one person, there is no back up plan or fail safe. If they get the sniffles, have a family emergency, injury or any number of reasons their plans change, as to why they can no longer complete the order. Often local bakeries will get a call in the 5 o'clock hour of someone in a bind because their baker had an "emergency" and they are now in the need of a custom 3 tier cake for the next day, and sadly often times they aren't left with enough time for the new baker to help or provide them what they are looking for. Bakeries are typically teams of people so when one person is down there is still a team of people to complete your order, you probably wouldn't have even known otherwise!
Local bakeries are held to high standards such as health codes, insurances, workman comp, local town regulations, fire and safety codes these not only protect the bakery, but they protect the consumer as well. Home bakers are unfortunately not held to these same standards- there is nothing protecting you from poor satiation or conditions. Many professionals also have attended programs and safety courses that most home bakers have not. Just an added risk you are taking when ordering from a location that is not a professional establishment.
That being said, every home baker is different and there are some rare good finds, but do your research and understand the gamble when hiring a home baker especially when celebrating your once in a lifetime moments, milestone birthdays, weddings and more!
