Tip Tuesday: What is a Macaroon?!

There are many variations on a macaron. The name macaron is derived from the Italian word macrone, maccarone, maccherone which means the italian meringue. Here at The Cake Boutique we make a traditional French Macaron which is a sweet meringue based confection made with egg whites, confectionary sugar, granulated sugar, almond flour and food coloring.  Macarons are typically filled with jam, buttercream, or ganche.

The macaroon is often mistaken as the macaron; many have adopted the French spelling of macaron to distinguish the two items in the English language. However, this has caused confusion over the correct spelling. In some recipes you will find macaroon which refers to the French confection, while other think that the two are synonymous. The word macaroon is simply the english translation to the french word macaron- so both are technically correct. Here at The Cake Boutique the coconut macaroons are commonly confused with the french macaron. Below is the Coconut Macaroon- this is popular in the United States and Australia. It is a soft cookie which is similar to the meringue- a cousin if you will. Its main ingredients are egg white, sugar, and coconut.

Whether a macaron or a macaroon one thing is for sure….they are delicious!
